Katherine Kropas used to laugh at televised stories of women who didn’t know they were pregnant until well into labor.
But, 23-year-old Kropas will take those a bit more seriously next time, seeing as she’s suddenly become the mother of a surprise newborn weighing in at 10 pounds, 2 ounces.
The bewildered woman learned about her pregnancy less than an hour before the baby girl’s birth.
On Tuesday morning, the Weymouth, Massachusetts woman began feeling incredibly strong stabbing pains in her back. Worried her health was in danger, Kropas took the day off to visit South Shore Hospital.
After an entire day’s worth of tests, doctors finally informed Kropas her blood tests indicated pregnancy.
And then it all made sense for the catering supervisor, who noticed swollen ankles a few days before but chalked it up to a hefty workload.
At 11:06 pm, just under an hour later, the baby was born through an emergency Cesarean section. Kropas’ boyfriend of more than two years, 40-year-old Dan Keefe, was present to witness his daughter’s first hours.
Kropas appears to be taking her newly minted motherhood in stride, telling the Patriot Ledger,
It’ll be fun. I’ll have lots of help.
Although Kropas has yet to announce the baby’s name, she told press she’s considering calling her Ellie as a “thank you” to her grandmother, the woman who drove her to the hospital.
The Kropas family and Keefe, planning to stay in the hospital until Sunday, are taking the time to relax and enjoy the newest addition to their clan.
The “perfectly healthy” little girl is a very welcome surprise.
